Civil Rights

Civil rights are the basic underpinnings of the social contract between citizens and their government. They insure to each citizen, regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, national origin, physical or mental disability or sexual orientation the right to be secure and protected from fear, intimidation, harassment, and physical harm. They guarantee each of us the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In the State of Colorado we have criminal laws which prevent bias motivated crimes, 18-9-121 C.R.S. and civil laws which govern the right of free expression for public school students, 22-1-120 C.R.S. and laws that prevent teacher employment discrimination, 22-61-101 C.R.S. In addition, there are several organizations that protect the civil rights of citizens. They are the American Civil Liberties Union, www.aclu.org, the Southern Poverty Law Center, www.splc.org, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, www.naacpldf.org, the Anti-Defamation League, www.adl.org, GLBT Organizations in Denver and Colorado, glbtcolorado.org, and the Council of American-Islamic Relations, www.dair.com to mention a few. There are also legal organizations which attempt to address these issues as well. The Colorado Criminal Defense Bar, www.ccdb.org, and the National Lawyers Guild of Colorado, core@nlgcolorado.org that address issues on a local level, the American Bar Association, www.americanbar.org addresses these on a national level. If you believe your civil rights have been violated, you have been arrested during a protest or are the victim of a hate crime, please contact my office to discuss your options. While my office may not be able to address all your situations, I would be happy to put you in contact with individuals or organizations who could.
